How to Make Steak and Gravy in a Crock Pot

Aunt Lou here.

So we all know that in this house we are suckers for a great deal on meat. Well, our freezer is still completely packed, so when Michael found a good deal on a flat iron steak, I needed to use it right up.

I saw this Slow Cooker Steak with Gravy recipe from Gooseberry Patch’sSpeedySlow-Cooker Recipes and was a little leery. You see, to say I am a picky eater would be quite the understatement. However, I married a human garbage disposal who loves anything and everything except peas (Go figure?). So I thought I would give it a try since it sounded like something Michael would love.

I am so very glad that I did! Roast is my all time favorite, but finding a good roast on sale is next to impossible. With this recipe, our flat iron steak tasted like a juicy, delicious roast! Mommy score!

I haven’t tried this with a different cream soup, but I think that cream of celery might work well. The flavor would change a bit, but since you don’t like mushrooms, that might not be a bad thing! If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out!

I haven’t made this with any other soup. You might try out homemade cream soup recipe. (https://www.recipesthatcrock.com/cream-soup-substitute-recipes/). If you want to try a canned soup, you might try cream of celery. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

I haven’t tried this with eye round steaks, but think it could work. This recipe is really good at making meat super tender. I haven’t froze this after cooking. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes. If you are asking if you can use frozen meat, health experts recommend thawing all meat before cooking in a slow cooker.

Could I substitute chuck roast in this recipe? I remember a recipe from years ago that used a roast and the same ingredients, wrapped the whole thing in foil and baked in the oven. It was so good.

Can’t honestly rate this recipe, but it looks delicious. My problem is I watched the video a few days ago, and thought I could remember it……….NOPE. I have it in the crock pot now backwards (onion soup packet and the canned soup). I don’t know why it wouldn’t taste the same. Here’s hoping.

FAQs

What is the best steak to cook in a slow cooker? ›

Here are the very best beef cuts to keep on hand to slow cook:
  • Chuck steak.
  • Round steak.
  • Blade steak.
  • Topside.
  • Silverside.
  • Skirt steak.
  • Shin (gravy) beef.

How much liquid do you put in a slow cooker for steak? ›

A beef joint in a crock-pot also needs about a ½ cup of liquid – beef broth is usually an excellent choice – to keep it tender and flavorful as it cooks. Place it on the lowest setting and only open it to add a small amount of liquid, if needed, and to stir your veggies.

Can you put raw steak in a slow cooker? ›

You can add more than one steak to the crock pot, but make sure they fit in a single layer. Cook on low for four to six hours, or until the internal temperature reaches your desired doneness (here's a steak temperature guide to help you with that).

Is gravy beef or chuck steak better for slow cooker? ›

Chuck steak was practically designed for slow cooking. It comes from the shoulder and upper arm of the cow, so it's done a lot of work over the life of the animal — with its abundant collagen, it's the type of cut that gets tough when grilled quickly, but becomes tender and juicier the longer you cook it.

Can you overcook steak in a slow cooker? ›

The low setting is important so you don't overcook it, potentially leaving you with a dry or tough meal. If you're wondering how long your meat will take to cook in a crock pot, we recommend consulting Crockpot's cook time guide for guidance.

Does slow cooking steak make it tender? ›

Yes! Slow cooked steak is a wonderful way to make savory and tender fillets each time. Slow cooking steak for hours on end allows for the flavors to fully saturate the meat, resulting in a truly mouth-watering, delectable dish.

How do you thicken beef gravy in a slow cooker? ›

A cornstarch slurry is a mixture of a cold liquid with cornstarch. It is used as a thickening agent, and is particularly common in Asian sauces. As a rule of thumb, dissolve 2 parts cold water and 1 part cornstarch. Add the slurry to your sauce as it simmers in the slow cooker.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low? ›

Low: 7-8 hours to reach the simmer point. High: 3-4 hours to reach the simmer point.

Can you cook steak in slow cooker without liquid? ›

If your slow cooker is 3/4 full, no extra liquid is required. However, if you're cooking a smaller amount of food, add 1-2cm of liquid in the bottom of the slow cooker bowl to ensure there's enough liquid for cooking. Don't add too much liquid, because as the food cooks, it produces its own liquid.

Do you brown steak before putting in crockpot? ›

While this hands-off, low-effort method will produce delicious results, it is worth adding one additional (straightforward) step when you're slow-cooking beef. Before putting the meat in the slow cooker, brown it in a skillet for a few extra minutes.

Why was my steak dry in slow cooker? ›

The most likely cause of this is overcooking. As meat cooks, its muscle fibers shorten in both length and width and eventually squeeze out the juices they normally hold. As you can imagine, this leaves meat dry, and often stringy in texture. To avoid this problem, choose less-tender cuts of meat.

Should you flip meat in slow cooker? ›

Should I Flip My Roast In The Slow Cooker?: There is no need to flip meat in a crock pot. In fact, I don't recommend trying it because it will be more hassle than it's worth.

Can you overcook gravy beef in slow cooker? ›

Yes, you can overcook beef stew and other dishes. The recipe will indicate the preferred time, and while one can go over that, it shouldn't be by too much. One hour isn't likely to make a difference for beef stew. Three hours would.

What is the best steak to slow cook? ›

Chuck steak is probably the most economical cut of beef. The chuck is found around the neck and shoulder, so it contains some connective tissue and fat that will melt down during long slow cooks and give your dish a rich, robust flavour.

What is gravy steak? ›

Gravy beef is a cut that comes from three main areas; the hind leg and the front leg (also known as shin) plus the neck area. It is rich in flavour and is traditionally used with the bone in for excellent stews and soups.

What is the best meat for low and slow cooking? ›

Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows that ribs (beef or pork), brisket, shoulders (pork or lamb), and pork belly are all fantastic candidates for low and slow cooking. But there are more!

Why is my chuck steak tough in slow cooker? ›

It wasn't cooked long enough. A long cook time in the crock pot dissolves the collagen in the meat and causes it to get tender, but before this happens the meat fibers will tighten (think an egg firming in the frying pan) and the meat will be tougher.

What is the easiest cut of steak to cook? ›

Sirloin. For the perfect midway point between flavor and tenderness, try the sirloin. If you'd like some elements of the ribeye and some of the filet mignon, you'd probably find this cut to be just right. Sirloin is cut near the hip and considered to be the everyman steak, which is perfect for the newcomer.

What is the underrated cut of steak that's ideal for slow cooking? ›

Under blade steak maintains its shape even when slow-cooked

But unlike most steak cuts, the under blade takes just as well to slow-cooking — this cut will maintain its integrity through the low and slow cooking process, per The Spruce Eats. Also known as a chuck flat, according to Beef.
